I’ve recently tried a Firestick and Chromecast w/Google TV and I hate them both in comparison. The ads are least intrusive on the Shield and UI superior. Live channels are great (customise your apps to suggest what content you want, not stuck to Prime or trying to get you to buy services (Google)), can add as many pinned apps to top as you like. Can sideload and use apps the other 2 won’t let me and has the best location avoidance as well (e.g. various issues w/Pluto, Peacock, Freevee either install or location getting busted even w/VPN on other two). Superior speed/response. This cannot be overstated compared to FS (yes, just using one again setting up for friend, ugh). Good small affordable Plex Server and I love it (P.S: and it streams my collection to my brother 300kms away even on bad Fixed Wireless connection). 2 USB slots so you can use a big HDD or run a powered USB hub w/many. I have an SSD as adoptable storage, meaning I’ve got 512GB, not 16GB plus a 14TB attached. I use Sony BT headphones and there’s no lag when watching movies so that’s great too. I don’t have a 4K TV, so can’t tell on that score but AI upscaling definitely helps, I have a lot of low quality media and it looks pretty good (though occasionally you have to switch up your settings re: artifacts). Has Chromecast. I have both drives mapped as network storage on PC so it’s a breeze to load apks or content. I can run emulation up to some Gamecube w/Dolphin, DS is good w/paid DraStic (Retroarch no good for DS on Shield). PSP and PS1 is a breeze (pro tip: Arc Browser app lets you list your game ROMs divided by console on the homescreen too, looks great). Have 3 Xbox controllers connected no major latency at all. GeForce is there if you need it, I was in on the beta but I don’t need cloud gaming/launcher but it worked OK during testing as did streaming from Steam on Surface to Shield…a few issues at times but again, I’m Fixed Wireless if you’re on cable you’d be fine if you wanna pay the monthly fee. The remote seemed like a weird shape at first but I quite like it. Nice to hold plus there’s a free remote app for your phone if you lose remote/it breaks. You can still use Wolf Launcher if the banner ads bother you but I find that a bit dated and ugly and I like the live channels I can add to my homescreen. If you don’t have a VPN and aren’t into retro gaming emulation or you don’t need Plex you probably don’t need this unless you’re hardcore into 4K upscaling and Dolby Atmos. With a premium VPN and split-tunnelling, you’ve got Australian and US TV at the same time without having to switch back and forth. Love it. BT Mouse works fine if you need to use trad Android apps (use Sideload Launcher to show any apps that don’t show up in your app list. E.g. I use FolderSync to sync game progress to cloud to other devices and that doesn’t have a TV/remote interface) The only question I guess is, are Nvidia going to make a 2023? Issues I previously reported are fixed. When it starts getting buggy, reboot.

I bought this to replace an ageing smart TV stick, and it was definitely a good purchase.
The picture quality is excellent, and it has good quality 4K upscaling which makes even SD content look good on a big screen.
The menus are responsive and quick, compared to my old Android TV stick which used to take its time to do things. The Google Play Store has apps for all of the major streaming playforms, and they all work very well on this device.
The USB slots on the back are useful for playing media held on portable storage. I haven’t tried it out as a Plex Server, as I have a dedicated server at home already, but this is a feature some may like.
The remote is a triangular shape, a little non conventional, but works really nicely, and as a plus it also is able to control our television volume, channels, etc, which is useful.

It gets a little deduction for price when you consider you can get alternatives that are much smaller and cheaper but they don’t do absolutely everything this does. But who is really streaming games? I dunno. It has great connectivity, solid components and looks good with a brilliant little remote.
The killer app is the “find the remote” voice or phone app command.
If you’re serious about your viewing with a high quality screen this is your device. The firestick especially is a great value alternative. Forget the rest in my opinion. Get this or get the Amazon Firestick depending on your needs/budget.
I did have some issues getting full sound support going but it may have been my hardware combo. Eventually it clicked after some fiddling in the settings. I’m not sure if the Firestick could have handled this set up.
Might get another shortly.

I purchased this to stream videos & music, play games and use it as a set top box.
In my opinion, it’s the best streaming box and retro gaming machine out there. It’s versatile and a powerful streamer with Chromecast built in and great gaming features. It’s an impressively powerful streaming device, I use it with a NAS which I’m running Plex on. All my home movies and cherished memories are available to stream to all devices within our home. Supports multiple formats for both video and audio.
Simply put, its an awesome device that sits quietly in a drawer!
