First of all, it’s not cheap, you are probably paying a lot for the Kensington name.

However, I think it’s well worth it after half a year of daily usage. When compared with other cheaper locks, the quality of this lock really shows. This slim version fits my Vaio Z pretty well. The turning action of the key is a bit stiff at first, but it quickly loosens up with increasing usage. I’ve never had any problem with the key stuck in the lock, as long as you make sure that you insert the key all the way in. The built-in wire strap is a great feature that I can’t live without. The cable is relatively stiff, so without the strap it would just fly everywhere in my bag. The key is locked to the lock when the lock isn’t secured to a laptop. This really prevents me from losing the key, and I never have any problem with the key coming out of the lock when carrying inside my bag.

So while there may be cheaper options out there, this lock definitely does what it’s designed to do, and does it very well. When compared with the price of a laptop and more importantly the personal and work files you have stored on the laptop, the extra money you pay for this quality lock just seem insignificant.

I like this type of laptop lock because it does not have the combination to remember and potentially mess up. I have had a combination one before, you know the standard 4 key rotating combo lock. I used one for almost a year before out of no where the device breaks on its own and leaves me with a laptop permanently locked to my desk. I had the correct combo inputted at least 20 times. I called customer service and they said…’very rarely does this happen, but it does. It seems one of the locking mechanisms might have slid accidentally thereby changing your original combo code. Just try every single combination possible and I’m sure you’ll get it off. It only takes 2 hours.” FYI It took me 3 hours to get through 1/3 of ALL possible combinations. I got frustrated and ending up physically breaking it out of my laptop lock slot. That probably wasn’t a good idea, but my laptop survived. I just cant use the standard lock on it anymore. It did surprise me however, how easily the lock was pried out of the slot If you do it just right. I don’t know about this one, but at least there’s no ‘rare possibility for the device to change keys.’ I’m guessing it affords the same protection as the other one would when working properly.

It is expensive, but there is no other good quality alternative lock, and I wanted a keyed lock, not number combination type.

I have a Sony Viao E Series 14 inch laptop model no. VPCEGAEN and the lock fits for this model. At first I thought the T bar is too small for the lock slot on my laptop and it won’t fit. But after pushing the T bar little further inside the lock port using the key, it fitted. To lock, turn anti-clockwise. To release lock, turn clockwise. Not knowing this, I faced some problem initially.

The other reviewer says the lock is not fitting on some Dell model laptop. I checked on Kensington website and they have a different model of the lock for Dell laptop. So, if you are thinking of buying it for Dell laptop, better check out on Kensington website beforehand.

This is a good basic protection for casual laptop theft. Your table or desk need T bar at the foot of it, else the tethering laptop to table is useless!

When I read all the reviews I was really skeptical but decided to take the chance and glad I did. The picture of the lock is out dated. The lock now has a bar to either side of the T-bar so the barrel doesn’t spin when locked in to the computer. The barrel can spin so therefore there is more configurations beside the 90 degree movement of the cable. I can see why other reviewers had a difficult time with their lock, they may have the old lock that is pictured. The lock fit perfectly and has a rubber pad to prevent scratching to the soft aluminum body of the MBP. The cable is flexible but will spring back to a straight cord when given the chance so be careful, it might hit/knock over something important. As another had suggested, I wish it came with a carry pouch and as the price being $40 it is sorta steep but according to Kensington this lock has their highest safety rating compared to the lock with the round keys. Make sure you have the lastest lock when it gets mailed to you, it should have the bars on the side of the T-bar and a rubber piece.
